Luis Suarez willing to return to international football for Uruguay at World Cup

The 39 year old stepped away from international football in September 2024, as Uruguays record goalscorer with 69 strikes in 143 outings.

His departure sparked debate when he hit out at manager Marcelo Bielsas leadership, alleging it split the team, though the ex Barcelona striker stated he has since offered apologies for his words.

"I would never refuse the call from the national side if they want me, particularly with a World Cup on the horizon," Suarez informed journalists, cited by EFE news outlet.

“Back then, I moved on to allow the new talent to emerge. I spoke out of turn. I have already made amends to those who deserved an apology.”

Playing now for MLS outfit Inter Miami, Suarez revealed he maintains his passion for the game, regardless of his years.

"It hits you that youve got some spark remaining," Suarez remarked.

"The competitive fire keeps burning. You notice it during matches, getting fired up over setbacks and sloppy balls, while relishing the thrill of finding the net."

Suarez has donned the Uruguay shirt at four World Cups and helped secure their 2011 Copa America triumph.

The 2026 World Cup, shared among Canada, the United States and Mexico, starts on June 11.
