Liverpool captain Van Dijk praises Szoboszlai as potential future leader
Virgil van Dijk has suggested that Dominik Szoboszlai might follow in his footsteps as Liverpool captain, describing the midfielder as a figure who could "become a leader for this squad".
The Hungarian has shone brightly for Liverpool during a challenging year for the defending Premier League title holders, showing his adaptability by stepping into the right-back role when needed.
After Szoboszlai hit 10 goals for the campaign in an FA Cup fourth-round victory over Brighton, Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah described him as "among the top talents globally at present".
Now approaching his personal best of 12 goals from his 2019/20 stint at Red Bull Salzburg, Szoboszlais comprehensive contributions at Liverpool have earned widespread admiration too.
Andy Robertson, turning 32 soon, serves as Liverpools vice-captain at the moment, though his deal expires at seasons end and his prospects remain unclear.
When questioned about Szoboszlai possibly assuming the captaincy, Van Dijk responded, "That decision rests with the manager Arne Slot, in my view. Im not sure. Yes."
"He has undoubtedly performed well. Hes also someone I believe can advance further in becoming a leader for this group.
"It begins with setting an example through actions, which he has achieved throughout this term," Van Dijk added.
"Yet there is room for growth in other aspects, and that is positive in my eyes, so I hope he proves vital for Liverpool in the seasons ahead."
Sitting sixth in the Premier League, a massive 17 points behind frontrunners Arsenal, Liverpool continue to seek clarity on a foot problem affecting midfielder Wataru Endo, who has also been deployed at right-back amid persistent problems.
The Japanese player has featured in only 12 matches this season, largely from the bench, yet Van Dijk emphasised that his limited minutes do not reflect his true impact.
"Its tough for us, as he is a key and highly regarded part of the squad, one of the guiding voices who consistently sets the standard with his play," the Dutch defender noted.
"He pours his all into every game. Its a significant setback, but we must cope and we shall. Fingers crossed for a quick recovery, though it seems it could drag on."
