Leverkusen sink Hamburg to keep in touch with top four

Bayer Leverkusen secured a 1-0 victory over Hamburg courtesy of a second-half strike from Christian Kofane, edging them nearer to the Bundesliga's top four on Wednesday.

The fixture, first planned for January yet delayed by harsh winter conditions, featured Kofane latching onto a pass from Ibrahim Maza before unleashing a powerful half-volley in the 73rd minute.

The result leaves sixth-placed Leverkusen, set to meet Arsenal in the Champions League round of 16, trailing fourth-placed Stuttgart by three points.

"We might have wrapped this up sooner," Leverkusen manager Kasper Hjulmand remarked to Sky. "We are glad for the three points, yet it came down to a single goal. We could have done with one or two more."

Hamburg occupy 11th position, holding a four-point buffer from the relegation play-off zone.

Battered by injuries, Leverkusen approached Wednesday's encounter hampered by an extensive list of absentees, including six established first-team members.

Having regained composure after a major summer restructuring, the 2023-24 double champions endured a recent slump, claiming only one league win in their prior four outings as the growing injury crisis impacted them.

The opening period produced limited scoring opportunities, with freshly promoted Hamburg showing stout resistance.

Leverkusen celebrated a goal in the 68th minute, only for it to be ruled out after defender Edmond Tapsoba handled the ball.

Shortly after, in the 73rd minute, Maza delivered a precise through ball past the Hamburg rearguard, enabling Kofane to convert with a superb effort.

Tottenham's loaned player Luka Vuskovic missed a prime late chance for a draw, firing a shot from close range straight at Leverkusen custodian Janis Blaswich before sending the rebound high over the crossbar.
