Leeds defeat Burnley to extend lead to nine points over Tottenham and virtually secure Premier League survival

Having already been relegated, Burnley aimed to restore a bit of dignity, yet their opening play showed no signs of a team eager to regain respect.

From the outset, the Clarets found themselves under pressure and soon conceded sloppily, as Anton Stachs long range shot appeared lacklustre, yet it evaded Martin Dubravka at his near post to give Leeds the lead.

Stach featured again shortly afterwards, setting up a chance for the Whites to double their advantage when he passed to Ao Tanaka, who fired high over the crossbar, and he might have faced further trouble moments later after losing his footing in his own penalty area, but Jaidon Anthony spared him.

It seemed the sole route for Burnley to gain momentum was via a Leeds mistake, and while they gradually became more involved in the first period, they failed to pose any real danger to Karl Darlows net.

Mike Jacksons squad appeared disorganised during the opening 45 minutes, concluding without registering a single effort on target. The record low expected goals in the Premier League stands at 0.02, and with Burnleys figure at 0.05 by halftime, they narrowly escaped making undesirable history in a largely uninspiring half.

Their feeble offensive display suggested a further Leeds strike would likely settle the outcome, and indeed it came just ten minutes into the second half.

Leeds started the restart aggressively, culminating in a fluid attack where Jayden Bogle delivered an excellent cross for Noah Okafor, who steered the ball across the goalkeeper and into the far corner.

A quick third strike removed any lingering uncertainty, as Tanakas powerful effort from afar was spilled by the keeper straight to Dominic Calvert Lewin, who prodded it home from close range inside the six yard box.

Burnley displayed some resilience by mounting a response, seeing a goal ruled out from Lucas Pires, who poked in the rebound following Bashir Humphreys blocked shot.

Loum Tchaouna then netted a legitimate one by smashing the ball into the net from within the penalty area.

This proved merely a token effort, as the evening was dominated by Leeds, who pulled nine points ahead of the relegation places and achieved near certain security with only three matches left.
