Late Godts Goal Rescues Ajax's Champions League Aspirations in Thriller Against PSV
PSV entered Amsterdam as league winners while Ajax aimed to maintain their push for second position ensuring automatic entry into next seasons UEFA Champions League. The home side fielded Kasper Dolberg instead of Wout Weghorst alongside a cautious midfield setup including Ko Itakura Youri Regeer and Jorthy Mokio.
Following a guard of honour from the Amsterdam outfit PSV who had relaxed on Ibiza earlier that week rubbed more salt in the supporters wounds by taking the lead just 33 seconds in when Ricardo Pepi nodded in at the back post following Yarek Gasiorowskis extension of Kiliann Sildillias long throw.
Couhaib Driouech seemed poised to double the advantage within the first ten minutes yet lacked the force to direct it into an unguarded goal.
The explosive start evolved into a goal filled spectacle as a set piece corner led to Ajax defender Anton Gaaei unleashing a strike from beyond the area into Matej Kovars distant corner equalising after 13 minutes.
Ajax dominated proceedings thereafter creating opportunities for the impressive Dolberg and Jorthy Mokio who narrowly missed with a shot just past Kovars upright in the dying moments of the opening period.
The initial quarter hour of the second half proved untidy with only Steven Berghuis testing the keeper as the experienced player looped an effort above the crossbar.
What began as errors descended into frustration as the contest lost its spark with neither Ajax nor PSV managing a shot on goal until the 77th minute when replacement Myron Boadu put PSV ahead again via a fortuitous finish after he and Itakura lost their footing.
It appeared set to trigger yet another post interval collapse for Ajax who underperformed in the latter stages but incredibly snatched victory through Mika Godts who volleyed home a rebound in the 92nd minute following Anton Gaaeis earlier attempt on Kovar marking his 17th strike of the campaign and snatching points from PSV at the death.
For the second occasion in their underwhelming 2025-26 campaign Ajax managed a stalemate against title holders PSV. This result sustains their bid for Champions League qualification though they must rely on positive outcomes elsewhere given Feyenoords three point advantage with just two matches left.
