Laporta reelected as Barcelona president for the coming five years
Joan Laporta has been reelected as president of Barcelona on Sunday, overcoming Victor Font to remain at the helm of the Catalan club until 2031.
The engaging 63 year old, who previously triumphed over Font in the 2021 poll, will resume his role in July following his recent resignation required by the election rules.
Approximately 42 percent of the club's members participated, casting a total of 48,480 votes.
With 36,117 votes tallied, Laporta secured 68.47 percent, while Font obtained 29.52 percent. Even with 12,363 votes left to process, Laporta's advantage is unbeatable.
"We feel disappointed, we had high hopes and its unfortunate, but we congratulate Laporta," Font stated to the media, conceding the result.
Laporta guided the club from 2003 to 2010, a period often seen as Barcelona's peak, highlighted by the 2009 treble under Pep Guardiola.
After Barcelona's 5-2 win against Sevilla that day, various first team players and manager Hansi Flick went to vote, with Laporta also appearing at the polling stations.
Among the voters were ex Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets, three time women's Ballon d'Or recipient and Barcelona Femeni standout Aitana Bonmati, plus former player and manager Xavi Hernandez.
Polling stations were established at Camp Nou, along with locations in Girona, Tarragona, Lleida in Catalonia, and Andorra.
Laporta began celebrating well before the final count, even dancing with the Barcelona squad after their strong performance at Camp Nou.
The attorney, chosen in 2021 after promising to retain star Lionel Messi, a goal he could not achieve, supported Barcelona's stability amid a severe financial downturn he inherited.
Laporta made bold moves by selling future broadcast revenues and portions of the club to fund acquisitions like Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha during the 2022 summer window.
Under his leadership, Barcelona claimed La Liga crowns in 2023 and 2025, and with Hansi Flick as coach, reached the Champions League semi finals last season, their first since 2019.
Laporta faced backlash for partnering with Real Madrid's Florentino Perez on the failed European Super League initiative. Barcelona withdrew from it earlier this year.
In his initial tenure, Laporta presided over a vibrant chapter for the club, featuring Ronaldinho's arrival, the rise of legendary player Lionel Messi, and Champions League victories in 2006 and 2009.
