Kylian Mbappe skips session as Alvaro Arbeloa leads first Real Madrid practice
Forward Kylian Mbappe did not show up when new Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa oversaw his initial training on Tuesday, succeeding Xabi Alonso in charge of the La Liga heavyweights.
Arbeloa received the appointment on Monday, and his opening fixture comes against Albacete in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, with the French attacker Mbappe set to sit it out.
Mbappe returned from a knee injury as a substitute near the end in Sundays Spanish Super Cup final loss to Barcelona, but he should focus on rehabilitation ahead of the Champions League encounter with old club Monaco next Tuesday.
A club insider shared with AFP that Mbappes no show at training made sense considering his knee concern.
Ex manager Alonso had conceded that fielding Madrids chief marksman against Barcelona in Saudi Arabia amounted to an intended wager.
Alonso, who departed after under eight months in the role, posted on social media that he exited having given his all.
"Events unfolded differently from my hopes," the Basque tactician noted on Instagram Tuesday.
"Leading Real Madrid brought honour and duty. I thank the team, squad, and especially supporters for their trust and backing.
"I depart with respect, thanks, and satisfaction from maximising my efforts."
