Kompany warns of complacency as injury-hit Bayern host Atalanta

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany stated on Tuesday that his primary duty is to avoid any sense of overconfidence, with his depleted team set to welcome Atalanta on Wednesday while holding a commanding 6-1 advantage from the first leg.

Even though forward Harry Kane was absent, the Bundesliga frontrunners dominated Atalanta in Bergamo last week during their Champions League round of 16 initial match, scoring three times in each half.

No side in the history of the European Cup has managed to reverse a five-goal margin in a return fixture, yet Kompany accepts the task of reminding his sidelined squad that the work remains unfinished.

"That is exactly my main responsibility in such circumstances," Kompany remarked to the press.

"The essential base for our efforts must be a desire to strive, a eagerness to sprint, and the pleasure in the game, all of which we intend to demonstrate."

Bayern played with just nine players but showed resilience in a 1-1 draw versus Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, and Kompany believes that outcome will motivate his players.

"The Leverkusen draw was in fact encouraging. It highlighted the potential narrative of our campaign.

"We lack significant margin for error. I prefer not to enter these matches overly relaxed. However, my strongest belief lies in this squad."

The sextuple Champions League champions are heavily favoured to advance to the quarter-finals, but they have suffered numerous injuries, especially in defence and goalkeeping.

Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, and Hiroki Ito remain sidelined, while Joshua Kimmich and Michael Olise face suspensions.

For the goalkeeper position, Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich are out, and reserve Jonas Urbig is battling to recover from a head knock picked up in Bergamo.

Should Urbig be unavailable, Kompany verified that young newcomer Leonard Prescott will take the role.

At 16 years and 191 days old, Prescott would eclipse the record for the youngest goalkeeper in Champions League history, surpassing Maarten Vandevoordt's mark by over a year.

Nevertheless, Kompany noted that the 2009-born goalkeeper appears composed.

"He is remarkably steady," Kompany added, emphasising "if he features tomorrow, he will receive our complete encouragement and assistance."

Kane came on as a substitute against Leverkusen following two missed matches and seems ready to feature from the start on Wednesday.
