Kompany refuses to let birthday festivities interfere with key St Pauli encounter

Bayern Munich will head to St Pauli for their Saturday fixture holding a nine point advantage at the top of the Bundesliga with just six games left to play. They also maintain a 2-1 edge against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter finals after their remarkable triumph over the La Liga champions at the Santiago Bernabeu earlier this week.

"Short answer is no," Kompany, marking his 40th birthday on Friday, declared during a press briefing when quizzed on plans for celebrations.

"Our sole focus is securing those three points versus St Pauli. Birthdays have typically come during semi final or quarter final periods for me so any victories here feel like an extra treat.

"I am attempting to steer clear of all the birthday distractions," he explained. "Priority mode is active. The next few days bring plenty of excitement already. Perhaps a glass of red wine this evening but preparation for the game comes first."

The Bavarians remain contenders for a treble including a DFB Pokal semi final date with Bayer Leverkusen lined up for 22 April.

They could also break the Bundesliga record for most goals in a campaign against St Pauli having netted 100 already just one shy of the historic benchmark.

Kompany suggested potential tweaks to his starting eleven for the Hamburg clash.

"The aim is a squad delivering the identical energy and focus seen in Madrid. Its usually straightforward for us but right now freshness factors into selections alongside talent," he noted.

"Any adjustments we opt for if necessary must preserve our current strengths."

Regarding the Champions League return fixture against Real Madrid next Wednesday Kompany insisted victory is essential.

"Having won at the Bernabeu we aim to follow up with another home success. My mindset on this remains straightforward," he concluded.
