King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh Selected for 2027 Asian Cup Final
Officials disclosed on Monday that King Fahd International Sport City Stadium in Riyadh will stage the opening fixture and the decisive final of the forthcoming Asian Cup, a major football event regarded as a key preparation for Saudi Arabia's 2034 World Cup.
Saudi Arabia has been granted hosting rights for the World Cup, yet it will first manage the Asian Cup, scheduled from 7 January to 5 February 2027.
The AFC stated in a release from Kuala Lumpur, "King Fahd Sports City Stadium will serve as the setting for the highly awaited final match and the kick-off game, which will include the host nation and three-time Asian Cup winners Saudi Arabia."
The AFC further noted that this Riyadh arena, accommodating more than 70,000 fans, will feature four group stage contests, one round of 16 encounter, and a quarter-final clash ahead of the early February final.
Affectionately called "The Tent" for its roof mimicking a classic Bedouin tent, this stadium ranks as the grandest among the eight locations for the football extravaganza.
Additional Asian Cup fixtures will occur in Jeddah and Al Khobar.
The AFC indicated that the official draw on 11 April in Riyadh will finalise the team matchups and starting times.
Qatar, which hosted the 2022 World Cup, organised and claimed victory in the Asian Cup two years earlier.
Intended originally for China in 2023, the competition was shifted elsewhere owing to the host country's Covid-19 measures during that period.
