Kerr on target as Australia make winning start to Women's Asian Cup
Leading forward Sam Kerr scored as Australia secured a narrow victory in their opening match of the Women's Asian Cup on Sunday, beating a determined Philippines 1-0 before a record attendance at Perth Stadium.
The Chelsea player gave the home side the advantage in the 14th minute, yet that proved to be the highlight despite their control of the ball.
It fell short of the sharp display expected, especially considering Australia's 8-0 triumph over the same opponents in 2023.
The result still delivered vital points in Group A, launching the Matildas' bid to claim the 12-team regional championship for the first time since 2010.
"All teams aim to triumph, but we are focusing on each match individually," Kerr commented on their title aspirations.
"This was a solid beginning with strong confidence in the squad. However, many strong sides feature in the Asian Cup, so approaching it step by step is key."
Following an energetic performance by US artist Audrey Nuna, known for "KPop Demon Hunters", the 44,379 fans erupted in applause as the players entered the field.
The Matildas broke the deadlock in the 14th minute after an initial period of caution, with Arsenal's Caitlin Foord connecting with Clare Wheeler's delivery to set up Kerr for a close-range header.
Shortly after, Emily van Egmond missed a chance to double the lead, sending a free header well over from Leicester.
Another seemed likely from Hayley Raso, but officials disallowed it for offside via video review, leaving Australia with just a slim edge at half-time.
Under Australian manager Mark Torcaso, the Philippines are progressing, having taken gold at last year's Southeast Asian Games, and they resiliently defended against a team full of players from English clubs.
Goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel and the backline stood firm as Australia found it hard to fashion genuine opportunities after the interval, prompting some frustration among spectators.
Their group also includes South Korea and Iran, set to clash on the Gold Coast on Monday.
The leading two teams from each of the three groups, plus the top two third-placed outfits, advance to the quarter-finals. For those finishing in the top six, spots in the 2027 World Cup in Brazil await.
