Kashima Antlers Claim Ninth J-League Crown in Tense Season Closer

Kashima Antlers secured their record breaking ninth J. League championship on the last day of the season as they edged out Yokohama F-Marinos 2-1 in a high stakes encounter.

In front of Brazilian icon and ex player Zico, the Antlers entered the match at their bustling home ground holding a slim one point advantage over Kashiwa Reysol.

Brazilian forward Leo Ceara netted once in each half to give Antlers the upper hand, yet Yokohama responded in the opening minute of five added seconds after the break, creating a dramatic finish especially with Reysol taking a 1-0 victory in their fixture.

The Antlers held firm to seal the triumph and lift their first league trophy since 2016, marking a successful debut campaign for manager Toru Oniki.

"The match turned challenging towards the close but our squad has developed resilience throughout the year," commented Oniki, who arrived at the club following four title wins at Kawasaki Frontale.

"Our aim was to establish a substantial advantage right from the start, but it all hinged on narrow decisions in the end."

Already the most decorated side in J. League history, this success extended Antlers lead to four titles ahead of their closest competitor.

They dominated the standings for much of the campaign yet struggled to distance themselves from Reysol, who chased their initial crown since 2011.

Reysol wrapped up with six consecutive victories and had not lost a league match since August.

"Our athletes now carry greater accountability towards the squad and the organisation, allowing them to handle this fixture calmly," Oniki added.

"Their psychological maturity has truly advanced."
