Kane Rescues Bayern Yet Historic Run Stops at Union
Harry Kane grabbed a late equaliser for Bayern Munich to secure a draw, ending their impressive unbeaten run at the start of the season in a 2-2 stalemate against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
Union's defender Danilho Doekhi netted twice, sandwiching a stunning individual goal by Luis Diaz. Kane's timely strike marked his 13th league goal in 10 matches this term.
"Achieving so many consecutive victories is remarkable, yet it can sometimes overshadow other aspects and spur opponents on further," Kane remarked to Sky.
"We're relieved it was not a defeat, and we press forward."
Even with the shared points, Bayern maintain a six-point lead at the summit, as RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund also faltered on Saturday.
"This is a valuable point for us; we earned it while our rivals did not," noted Bayern skipper Manuel Neuer.
Bayern had triumphed in 16 straight games across all tournaments to open the campaign, a feat unmatched in Europe's elite leagues, but appeared fatigued following their midweek 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain with 10 players for much of the match.
Kompany opted for only one alteration in Bayern's lineup on Saturday, which was evident as the away side seemed lethargic and found it hard to generate opportunities early on.
Union saw an initial goal disallowed due to a marginal offside call, but they went ahead in the 27th minute when Doekhi slipped the ball past Neuer from near point-blank range.
The title holders were hemmed in their half but managed to level through one of their initial attacks, with Diaz producing a miraculous finish just before the interval.
The Colombian attacker kept a ball in play, spun past a marker, and rifled it home from an acute angle.
Doekhi bundled in a loose ball amid a packed box and into the net's far corner, restoring Union's advantage with seven minutes left.
However, as Union eyed their first triumph over Bayern, Kane converted in the 93rd minute to preserve his team's unblemished record this season.
Union's manager Steffen Baumgart described it to the press as his team's finest showing since his arrival in January.
"This is the level required to take points from Bayern," he commented.
Dortmund Stalemate as Leipzig Falter
In other action, Dortmund ended in a 1-1 tie away to Hamburg, where the home team levelled via Ransford-Yeboah Koenigsdoerffer in the seventh added minute.
After a 4-1 drubbing by Manchester City in the Champions League during the week, Dortmund put up a steady but unremarkable display in a match lacking clear-cut chances, with Carney Chukwuemeka finding the net in the latter period.
Koenigsdoerffer headed home a delivery at the death to thwart Dortmund's win, keeping Niko Kovac's men from rising to second and narrowing the distance to table-toppers Bayern.
RB Leipzig slipped too, conceding points for merely the third occasion this season in a 3-1 defeat at Hoffenheim.
Young striker Yan Diomande gave Leipzig the edge after nine minutes, continuing his run of goals over three games.
Hoffenheim responded on 20 minutes as Albian Hajdari slotted home. The home side went ahead shortly before the break with Tim Lemperle nodding in their second.
Leipzig's push for a comeback was ended when Grischa Proemel struck with 11 minutes to go.
Bayer Leverkusen secured their largest victory of the campaign, demolishing Heidenheim 6-0 on home soil to rise to fourth place.
Patrik Schick and Ibrahim Maza each bagged a brace, joined on the scoresheet by Jonas Hofmann and Ernest Poko.
Borussia Moenchengladbach face local foes Cologne later Saturday.
