Japanese FA dismisses Danish coach Nielsen for insufficient drive despite Asian Cup triumph
Just last month, Japan capped a commanding run in the Asian Cup with a 1-0 victory over hosts Australia in the final, claiming the continental crown for the third occasion across the previous four tournaments.
Qualifying for the semi-finals also secured their place at the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil.
Nevertheless, these achievements fell short of the Japanese Football Association's standards, prompting the end of Nielsen's appointment as the pioneering overseas manager for the Japan women's squad.
The association announced on Thursday that Nielsen's deal had run its course without extension.
Norio Sasaki, head of the women's national team, contended that Japan stood no chance of conquering the upcoming World Cup under Nielsen's guidance, labelling his methods as overly lenient and mild.
A stricter regimen and more intense sessions are essential. In discussions about elevating the squad further, he seemed devoid of enthusiasm, Sasaki remarked.
Since assuming control in December 2024, Nielsen guided Japan through 12 victories, four stalemates, and four losses.
