Japan Coach Nielsen Feels Fortunate After Long-Awaited Asian Cup Victory
The skilled squad demonstrated dominance on their path to Saturdays final yet faced a tough challenge from the Matildas with Maika Hamanos 17th minute effort from distance proving the decisive factor in front of over 74,000 supporters in Sydney.
"I feel incredibly fortunate to coach players of such high calibre" Nielsen remarked the ex Denmark and Switzerland manager who took charge in late 2024.
"Japan serves as a model for others in various aspects. We have crafted an approach that suits our athletes given their abilities.
"Though we struggled to establish our flow the determination of the team and their relentless effort elevate us by 10 to 20 percent.
"Being skilled and appealing feels good yet without securing the title it means little" he continued.
"Our performance fell short of potential but the team ensured it mattered. Japan has waited far too long for another trophy making this achievement vital and earned."
Ranked sixth globally Japan entered as frontrunners even amid a supportive audience backing an Australian outfit eager for their initial silverware since 2010.
The outcome hung in the balance.
Arsenals Caitlin Foord created three prime opportunities for the home side while Australia bombarded the Japanese net during the closing 15 minutes in pursuit of a leveller.
However Nielsens group held firm through resolute defending to claim a third regional crown following successes in 2014 and 2018 both versus Australia by identical margins.
Nielsen offered warm commendation for Joe Montemurros resilient group.
"Australia boasts a top tier outfit featuring elite talents. They received strong guidance from Joe who consistently held aces." he noted.
"Our superb strike came courtesy of Maika a promising young talent rising fast."
Montemurro described the campaign as "a superb voyage" for his players in spite of the harsh loss as attention shifts to the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
"I have 26 fighters on the pitch who delivered outstandingly for 21 days" he stated.
"At times fortune aligns with you sometimes not. Yet for our group this represented a remarkable path. We faced elite opponents just as planned.
"We have strengthened our identity as a unit and our core values" he concluded. "Moving ahead we must sustain the conviction."
