Ivory Coast's Elye Wahi reportedly arrested for alleged match fixing on the eve of the World Cup

Wahi, 23, who made his World Cup debut during Ivory Coast's 1-0 victory over Ecuador on Sunday, was arrested in connection with events that took place two weeks before the tournament.

According to The Athletic, the forward is currently under investigation, with authorities seeking to determine whether he intentionally received a yellow card while playing for his club Nice against Metz on 17 May.

He was arrested by French police on 29 May, immediately after scoring a brace in Nice's 4-1 relegation play-off victory against Saint-Etienne.

A spokesperson for the Marseille public prosecutor's office told The Athletic: “We can confirm that a 23-year-old football player competing in France's Ligue 1 was arrested on 29 May as part of an investigation opened by the Marseille public prosecutor's office into allegations of organised fraud, sports corruption, handling of proceeds of crime and money laundering.”

“He was released following an interview while in police custody. The investigations are ongoing. The football player is not a member of the French squad taking part in the World Cup.”
