Italy Coach Gattuso Calls for Total Dedication with World Cup Hopes Hanging in Balance
Italy head coach Gennaro Gattuso urged his players for "maximum commitment" on Monday, as the Azzurri's direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup now depends on other results.
The Italians face Moldova away on Thursday before welcoming Norway to Milan on Sunday. They sit second in Group I, trailing leaders Norway by three points.
"This trip will not be straightforward; I expect full effort to build on our progress from September," Gattuso stated during a pre match press briefing.
"We will give chances to squad members who have seen limited action against Moldova, yet our focus remains on our own performance rather than Norways game," he added.
"Preparing for the Moldova clash takes priority since the Norway encounter feels more straightforward. This Norwegian side poses challenges with their pace, strength, and unique playing approach," remarked the ex AC Milan and Napoli manager.
Italy missed the previous two World Cup editions. A second place finish ensures play off spots for them.
Topping the group directly qualifies them for the 2026 tournament in North America, achievable mathematically via victories over Moldova and Norway.
That said, they require substantial goal margins in both fixtures to surpass Norways superior goal difference.
Gattuso must manage without Fiorentina forward Moise Kean, who netted six times in his recent four international outings but picked up a club injury.
Liverpool attacker Federico Chiesa opted out of the November internationals. He has been absent from the national squad since the 2024 Euros.
Appointed after Luciano Spalletis sacking following the 3 0 loss in Oslo back in early June, Gattuso has transformed Italy, securing four straight triumphs with 16 goals tallied.
The ex AC Milan standout also explained that a planned training retreat for March play off prep fell through "owing to scheduling conflicts".
"We must optimise by evaluating talents domestically and overseas," he noted.
