Iran waits for FIFA reply on shifting World Cup venues prior to finalising participation
Irans football association known as FFIRI has been advocating for relocating the teams three group stage World Cup fixtures from the United States to Mexico due to US military actions with Israel that ignited the current regional conflict.
The FFIRI mentioned last month that talks were underway with FIFA regarding this venue change and Irans sports ministry has prohibited national and club teams from visiting nations deemed hostile pending further instructions.
Nevertheless FIFA president Gianni Infantino stated last week that Irans matches would proceed as planned.
Our appeal to FIFA to shift Irans fixtures from the US to Mexico remains active yet we await their feedback Donyamali shared with the Turkish state news outlet Anadolu in a weekend interview.
If approved Irans involvement in the World Cup would be confirmed though FIFA has yet to reply.
As Sports Minister alongside the Iranian football association we shall prepare the squad for the tournament but the ultimate call rests with the government
Iran is set to contest all Group G games on US territory facing New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles then Egypt in Seattle for the last match.
US President Donald Trump noted last month that while Irans national side is invited to compete in the US concerns over their life and safety might arise.
He subsequently clarified that no dangers to players would originate from the United States.
Per FIFAs pertinent rules the host nation must ensure security Donyamali continued. With the World Cup approaching swiftly assuring safety now seems doubtful.
In this context the chances of Iran competing in US based World Cup games are slim though if proper security assurances are given the government will decide on participation
FIFA offered no immediate comment on an emailed enquiry.
The World Cup will occur across the US Mexico and Canada between June 11 and July 19.
