Introducing Kruger United, the Club Poised to Join the Betway Premiership as Its Latest Member
Kruger United currently enjoy a five point advantage at the summit of the Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC), having triumphed in their most recent four encounters, with seven victories from their preceding nine matches (one draw, one defeat).
Their final four matches pit them against sides occupying the lower five positions, and considering their current momentum alongside the struggles of those opponents, it appears highly unlikely they will fail to secure the direct promotion place.
They lead Cape Town City and Milford FC by eight points, while Casric Stars, their primary competitors for the leading position, trail by nine. The sole credible threat now comes from Northern Cape outfit Hungry Lions, who sit five points adrift.
This represents a remarkable ascent for a team established in 2023, following the acquisition of ABC Motsepe League club Caroline FCs status.
Promotion to the second division occurred prior to the 2024/25 term, achieved by defeating Highbury FC in the nationwide play offs.
In their debut season within the MFC, the side achieved a respectable fifth place, falling short of the play off spots by a mere three points due to a lacklustre conclusion, amid whispers of delayed or missing wage payments. Nonetheless, this foundation has underpinned their present achievements.
The team is guided by Lesotho native Abraham Mongoya, who is managing the club for the second time and assumed control after Vusi Vilakazi departed for Chippa United midway through the season.
Mongoya began the campaign leading another second division team, Upington City, but departed in October. He also helmed TS Sporting during the 2022/23 term.
The squad features numerous seasoned performers, such as ex SuperSport United midfielder Morne Nel, former Cape Town City and TS Galaxy defender Ebrahim Seedat, Benin national keeper Marcel Dandjinou, past Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu striker Celimpilo Ngema, ex Bafana Bafana centre back Tercious Malepe, and previous Bloemfontein Celtic and Moroka Swallows stopper Wandisile Letlabika.
Their campaign has hinged on robust performances at home, remaining undefeated there with nine successes and four stalemates across 13 outings, marking the divisions strongest such record.
Results on the road (six wins, three draws, four losses) fall somewhat short, yet match the leagues top away haul alongside Cape Town City, yielding 21 points.
They have netted 41 times, topping the scoring charts, though they have let in 31, the highest among top eight sides and tied for sixth worst overall in the second tier.
Their aggregate of 72 goals both scored and conceded stands as the divisions loftiest, clearly embracing the philosophy of outscoring foes rather than prioritising defensive solidity.
Upcoming games include a trip to last placed Baroka FC this Sunday, a home clash with penultimate Black Leopards on May 2, an away fixture versus Gomora United on May 10, and a final home tie against The Bees on May 17.
Home fixtures take place at KaNyamazane Stadium, situated about a 30 minute drive from Mbombela, potentially setting up provincial competition with TS Galaxy in the elite division come next season.
