In fine form: Kane targets Lewandowski's Bundesliga scoring record
Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane believes he can break Robert Lewandowski's Bundesliga single-season scoring mark after netting two goals in Saturday's 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund as England's skipper.
Kane slotted in a clever effort and then dispatched a spot-kick as Bayern fought back to virtually eliminate Dortmund's chances in the Bundesliga title race.
He grabbed a brace for the fourth consecutive league match, lifting his seasonal haul to 30 goals, just 11 shy of Lewandowski's 41 from the 2020-21 season with Bayern.
"I'm in great shape. I must continue with my current approach," Kane said to Sky Germany, adding he is "definitely" poised to surpass the record with 10 matches left in the campaign.
"It's a topic that arises almost after every match these days, yet plenty of fixtures remain. I aim to stay steady throughout that stretch.
"We'll find out by late April or early May if it can happen."
Lewandowski took the record from German legend Gerd Mueller. Many viewed Mueller's 40-goal haul from the 1971-72 season as untouchable until Lewandowski's impressive streak.
The 32-year-old Kane has now scored 45 times across all competitions this season, his highest ever, with a third of the term still to go.
"As a forward, there are phases where nearly every shot finds the net, regardless of execution," Kane explained to ESPN.
The win extended Bayern's lead over Dortmund to 11 points and set them on track for yet another Bundesliga crown, though Kane urged his team to remain vigilant.
"It's not wrapped up yet. A few weeks back, we held an 11-point advantage, and we witnessed how fast things can shift in just two games," he noted.
"We need to remain concentrated. This was clearly a key fixture, a major boost for us, now 11 points ahead. We're in a strong spot."
