Howe Brushes Aside Newcastle's Favourable Recent Form Against Man Utd
Eddie Howe, Newcastle's manager, indicated that the team's solid recent performances against Manchester United offer minimal reassurance heading into their Friday fixture at Old Trafford.
His players approach the renowned 'Theatre of Dreams' boasting triumphs in five of the previous six fixtures across all tournaments versus United, alongside four wins from the last five Premier League meetings, subsequent to their 2-0 setback against the Red Devils in the 2023 League Cup final.
Yet when queried about whether that Wembley defeat acted as a pivotal spur for his squad, Howe answered: "I'm not certain.
"It proved a difficult episode, though we tackle each adversary with straightforward intent. My approach entails evaluating the rival team's assets and shortcomings.
"We avoid dwelling on the opponent's identity; rather, we engage the contest directly, aiming to expose their frailties while shielding our own, maintaining a consistent methodology.
The ex-Bournemouth coach elaborated: "We've held a positive record versus Manchester United of late, yet it holds no sway in this particular matchup.
"This stands as a fresh, isolated challenge, and as noted, they have advanced, displaying notable solidity in recent outings, even their latest at Aston Villa without a victory, where they nonetheless mounted a robust and effective display."
Newcastle surpassed Manchester United by 10 league positions and 24 points in the prior campaign, though they step onto the pitch for the Boxing Day encounter three points behind their opponents, having conceded two following their 2-2 stalemate with Chelsea at home on Saturday.
Club's priciest acquisition Nick Woltemade bagged a brace during a commanding opening 45 minutes, further cementing ties with Newcastle's dedicated and fervent fanbase.
"His goal celebrations highlight a genuine rapport," Howe observed. "The fans show clear delight for him, and he gladly partakes in their jubilations.
"Saturday marked his standout contribution to the side. He shone brightly, above all in the initial period.
"His essential traits resurfaced for us, particularly through his interplay; he retreated deeper occasionally to facilitate ball progression across the pitch zones, yet vitally, he positioned himself effectively within the penalty area whenever the ball entered."
