Harry Wilson Scores in Victory as Fulham Overcome Burnley to Reach Mid Table
As time slips away for Burnley in their fight against relegation, each match feels crucial for Scott Parkers team. Facing his former club Fulham, they were unlikely to receive any mercy, yet they created an initial chance when Zian Flemmings header towards goal was stopped by Calvin Bassey.
Harry Wilson had been a key player against Burnley earlier in the season, involved in all three of Fulhams goals during their 3 to 2 triumph. Today, the Welsh forward posed similar problems, nearly scoring three times with two shots curving just past the post and one requiring a solid clearance from Martin Dubravka.
Opportunities continued for the familiar faces, and Flemming enjoyed the clearest in the opening half, breaking free in the box to meet a precise cross, though his header flew directly at Bernd Leno.
Despite their efforts, no team broke the deadlock before the interval, but with so much at stake, the second period was set to deliver more excitement.
Fulham indeed turned up the intensity after the restart, building early momentum that led to a prime scoring moment. Josh King broke clear towards goal, his first attempt saved by Dubravka, but Rodrigo Muniz then fired the rebound over the bar from close range.
Those failures proved expensive for the home side, who were quickly countered as Burnley struck first despite the flow of play.
Lyle Foster carved out space from the right inside channel and whipped in a precise pass low across the goalmouth, allowing Flemming to finish from the back post. True to form, however, Burnley squandered their advantage shortly after due to another defensive error.
A speculative effort into the penalty area led Dubravka to rush out rashly, clashing with King and leaving the ball loose for the Fulham player to slot home and tie the game.
Buoyed by the equaliser, Marco Silvas squad pushed forward confidently and soon claimed the lead. Wilson cut inside from the flank and unleashed a sharp shot that found the near post.
Josh Laurent spurned a fine chance to draw level late on, and his day deteriorated further in stoppage time with a red card for halting Raul Jimenez on a clear run to goal.
The Mexican forward composed himself to bury the penalty and seal a strong result for Fulham, who capitalised on their earlier kick off compared to many European challengers.
