Guardiola confirms City commitment amid growing Maresca rumours

Pep Guardiola has once again voiced his intention to remain with Manchester City, even amid suggestions that ex-Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca has engaged in discussions regarding a possible role at the Etihad.

The veteran City coach, aged 54, indicated last month his plan to honour his agreement with the club, set to conclude after the 2026/27 campaign.

This statement addressed rumours that City had selected Maresca, previously an aide to Guardiola, as a potential heir to the Spanish tactician in case he opts to exit following the current term.

Maresca has now separated from Chelsea, departing Stamford Bridge on New Year's Day. Reports suggest the Italian's leave stemmed from his disclosure to the club about conversations with City.

Guardiola, approaching the tenth year of his tenure this year, commented: "The only thing I can say is that Chelsea, I believe, from my perspective, are parting with an exceptional, exceptional coach, an exceptional individual.

"However, this represents a choice by Chelsea's leadership, so I have nothing further to add."

Guardiola, boasting six Premier League victories with City, continued: "I possess a contract. I have repeated it countless times. Ten years at this club, I will depart eventually but I hold a contract. I feel content. I aim to compete alongside my players.

"The leadership shows me respect, evidenced last season by the club's circumstances, we failed to secure a victory for two or three months. They stood by me.

"One additional year on my contract remains. I appreciate my time here, so time will tell, as you will witness."

In their title pursuit, City surrendered two points during a captivating 0-0 stalemate versus Sunderland on Thursday, trailing Premier League frontrunners Arsenal by four points midway through the season.

Guardiola's squad faces Chelsea at home on Sunday, with the City manager acknowledging uncertainty over the encounter.

"We avoid extensive discussion when unclear on the opponents' approach, given the unknown identity of the manager on the sidelines," he noted.

"Uncertainty prevails, so no fretting over it. Concentrate on your duties, your preparations. Such focus will benefit us across demanding matches including Chelsea and Brighton."

Chelsea revealed on Friday that their under-21s coach Calum McFarlane will assume temporary responsibility for the side against City.
