Grudas late strike secures Leipzig draw against Wolfsburg
A superb last-minute effort by Brajan Gruda earned RB Leipzig a 2-2 draw against Wolfsburg at home in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
Strikes by Mohamed Amoura and Mattias Svanberg, bookending a goal from Yan Diomande, had placed Wolfsburg in position for a win, but the Brighton loanees curled shot in the 89th minute earned the home team a point.
In just his third match for Leipzig, Gruda proved vital for both of their goals, as the side closed to within two points of fourth-placed Stuttgart and one point clear of Bayer Leverkusen, who still have a fixture to play.
Reeling from a midweek German Cup exit to Bayern Munich, Leipzig held sway during the first period.
Kamil Grabaras outstanding saves alone denied the home side, with Diomande, Gruda and Konrad Harder all drawing fine stops from the Polish shot-stopper.
Amoura caught the hosts off guard with a powerful drive shortly after the interval, rifling it in from just outside the penalty area.
The first-half standout Grabara gave Leipzig a lifeline with 20 minutes left by passing right to Gruda, who teed up Diomande to blast it in.
The Wolves reclaimed their advantage eight minutes afterwards, as Jeanuel Belocian split the Leipzig rearguard with an easy ball for Svanberg to finish.
Gruda found himself ideally positioned again for Leipzigs leveller, pouncing on a stray ball inside the area before bending a precise shot into the upper corner.
Earlier that Sunday, a late penalty by Alexis Claude-Maurice delivered Augsburg a 1-0 victory at home over bottom-placed Heidenheim, pulling the team six points away from the drop zone.
