Gor Mahia earn revenge over rivals AFC Leopards in FKF league Mashemeji derby

In the 99th edition of the derby which drew a large attendance from supporters of both clubs, Gor Mahia entered the match determined to settle scores after suffering a 1-0 defeat in their earlier encounter that season.

Beyond just avenging the loss, Gor Mahia understood that securing any form of win would solidify their position at the top and create a six-point lead over their fierce opponents with only five games left in the campaign.

Before this highly anticipated clash, Gor Mahia boasted 17 victories, seven stalemates, and four losses, whereas AFC Leopards, led by head coach and ex-player Fred Ambani, had achieved 16 wins, seven draws, and five setbacks.

Goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi was reinstated in the AFC Leopards lineup as coach Fred Ambani selected his starting eleven against Gor Mahia, while Kenya international Byrne Omondi took over from Gadd Mathews in the Gor Mahia goal.

Gor Mahia claimed the initial corner of the match thanks to Patrick Essombe. Enock Morrison sent in the ball from the right flank, yet an AFC Leopards defender managed to clear the danger.

By the 14th minute, Gor Mahia kept pressing forward and Ebenezer Adukwaw earned a free kick just beyond the penalty area. The Ghanaian player took the kick himself, but his shot sailed just past the post.

Gor Mahia maintained control throughout the derby and Katasi made two key saves for AFC Leopards. He first stopped Adukwaw from point-blank range and then thwarted Patrick Essombe who was poised to put Gor Mahia ahead.

Right after that narrow escape, the Cameroonian Essombe squandered yet another opportunity by heading the ball directly into Katasi's grasp when he could have scored.

AFC Leopards midfielder Boniface Munyendo became the first player cautioned after committing a reckless challenge.

Gor Mahia created yet another promising moment from a corner kick, but Katasi excelled in stopping Paul Ochuoga.

The opening period concluded without goals, though Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor appeared visibly annoyed as he headed to the dressing room, given his team had clearly outplayed their opponents and deserved to lead at half time.

As the second half began, Ambani introduced a pair of substitutes for AFC Leopards, with young talent Kelly Madada and Hassan Beja replacing Munyendo and Ronald Sichenje. On the Gor Mahia side, Ebenezer Adukwaw made way for Ebenezer Assifuah.

Alpha Onyango netted the decisive strike that quieted their longstanding foes by the final whistle. The defender struck from distance for Gor Mahia after settling Bryton Onyona’s delivery and blasting it into the upper left corner.

This result allowed Gor Mahia to strengthen their hold on first place with 61 points.

Approaching the derby, Gor Mahia had endured a winless streak across their prior three outings. Following a 2-1 triumph over Shabana, they managed a 0-0 tie with Kariobangi Sharks, then lost 1-0 to Tusker FC, and later drew 0-0 against Bandari FC.

AFC Leopards saw their three-match winning sequence interrupted by a 3-0 loss to title holders Kenya Police FC in their most recent game, and they hoped to regain momentum with a derby success.

Before that reversal, AFC Leopards had triumphed 1-0 over Tusker, 1-0 against Kariobangi Sharks, and 2-0 versus Murang’a Seal. Across the previous 98 derbies leading up to Sunday, Gor Mahia held 34 wins, there were 35 draws, and AFC Leopards claimed 29 victories.

In the prior campaign, the initial clash between the powerhouses finished 0-0, followed by a 1-1 result in the return leg. Yet in the 2024-25 season, Gor Mahia celebrated by achieving a double against their adversaries.

Gor Mahia took a 2-0 win in the opening fixture and followed with a 1-0 success in the return match en route to clinching their record 21st league championship. The narrow triumph propelled Gor Mahia to 61 points atop the standings, while second-placed AFC Leopards stayed at 55 points.

In further results, APS Bomet narrowly beat Sofapaka 1-0, KCB and Kakamega Homeboyz shared a 1-1 outcome. Ulinzi Stars grabbed a crucial 2-1 success against Bandari, Shabana and current champions Kenya Police FC ended in a 0-0 deadlock.

Nairobi United claimed a 2-1 win over Mathare United, whereas Kariobangi Sharks overcame Murang’a Seal 1-0.
