Ghana Not Expected to Play Second Pre-World Cup Friendly, GFA's Henry Asante Twum Confirms

Ghana are not set to play a second pre-World Cup friendly ahead of their Group L opener against Panama, according to GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum.

Talking to 3Sports, Twum disclosed that despite previous indications that Ghana might take on Jamaica or Honduras during their final warm-ups on American soil, that match has not come to fruition.

The Black Stars recorded a 1-1 draw against Wales in Cardiff last Tuesday, marking the first ever encounter between the two sides and also Carlos Queiroz's debut as manager.

After that match, the squad travelled to Virginia in the United States, where they have been training in readiness for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

There had been rumours that a second friendly was under consideration to provide the team with another competitive outing before the tournament proper starts in Toronto on 17 June. Those rumours have now been laid to rest.

"At this stage it is a definite no," he told 3Sports. "We have nothing agreed upon at this stage. It seems improbable, but I am not in a position to completely rule it out."

The GFA representative kept the door slightly ajar in case Queiroz has a change of heart, but indicated that even if a match were arranged, it would be carefully managed and of low intensity.

"If we wake up tomorrow and he wants to play a low to medium intensity match, I do not believe he would accept a high intensity one at this juncture. However, if tomorrow he decides he wants a low to medium intensity game, we will announce it. As things stand, there is no such agreement on the table."

Twum was also eager to emphasise the joint approach to decision-making between the coaching staff and the federation.

"If the coach wants a match, we organise it. If he does not require one, we proceed without. We informed him about a second fixture before the Wales game. We were all anticipating it. Unfortunately it did not come together, and as a group we have chosen to move forward. So it is not solely down to the coach or the FA. We collaborate to secure the best possible preparations for the team."

Ghana's complete 2026 FIFA World Cup itinerary from Toronto to Philadelphia

With no additional friendlies scheduled, Ghana's attention now turns fully to the World Cup. The Black Stars will remain at their training camp in Virginia before departing for their official base at Bryant University in Rhode Island on 11 June.

From there they will relocate to Toronto on 15 June, only two days before their World Cup opener against Panama on 17 June at BMO Field.

They will then face England on 23 June in Boston, with the group stage finishing against Croatia on 27 June in Philadelphia.
