Getafe's Home Victory Hands Real Madrid Setback in La Liga Title Fight

Real Madrid endured a costly 1-0 loss to Getafe on their own turf in La Liga on Monday, which positioned them four points adrift of table toppers Barcelona.

Alvaro Arbeloa's team, undone by an outstanding volley courtesy of Martin Satriano, marked their second straight defeat in Spain's premier division, a feat not seen since 2020.

To compound the woes for Los Blancos, forward Franco Mastantuono received a red card in added time seemingly for protesting to the official.

"Clearly this was a fixture where we might have performed more effectively, yet I believe my squad put in the effort and generated more promising opportunities than our opponents," Arbeloa remarked to the media.

"That said, in this sport, effort alone does not guarantee success, and Getafe delivered an impressive performance."

Absent French sensation Kylian Mbappe, who remained in France addressing a knee injury, Madrid deployed Gonzalo Garcia up front with Brazilian talent Vinicius Junior at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid had lost to Osasuna the previous weekend, enabling Barcelona to surge ahead in the championship contest, and Hansi Flick's outfit extended their advantage with a resounding victory over Villarreal on Saturday.

Vinicius, enjoying a strong run in 2026 following a patchy beginning to the campaign, wasted a promising opening goal effort.

The forward raced clear but goalkeeper David Soria blocked it adeptly with his foot.

A clever spin move by Arda Guler almost unlocked the scoring, though Soria diverted the Turkish player's effort over the crossbar.

Getafe endured a tough moment from a heavy clash involving Madrid's Antonio Rudiger and Diego Rico, where the German's knee struck the Spaniard's head.

Uruguayan striker Satriano opened the scoring with a sublime shot from just outside the penalty area, set up by a header from fellow Uruguayan Mauro Arambarri.

Soria, excelling throughout, denied Vinicius once more after the break, prompting the Brazilian to urge greater backing from the home supporters.

Yet the side offered little to inspire, despite Rudiger nearly equalising via a headed attempt.

No Surrender from Madrid

This fragmented outing came from a Madrid team that faces Celta Vigo away in La Liga this Friday, followed by a Champions League last sixteen clash at home against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, with doubts over whether leading marksman Mbappe will recover in time. 

In the dying moments, Mastantuono was ejected, apparently for remarks directed at the referee, prior to Getafe also dropping to ten players as Adrian Liso picked up a second booking for delaying play by kicking the ball away.

"No one in this group is conceding defeat, this is Real Madrid after all, we battle right up to the final whistle," Arbeloa continued.

"A four point gap is something we can close, and we intend to compete fiercely for it."

Jose Bordalas's Getafe climbed to 11th place and savoured their inaugural triumph at the Bernabeu in 16 years.

"Gaining anything here is tremendously challenging, so I must praise the squad for their solid backline work, we netted our goal and might have added more towards the close," commented Getafe's Kiko Femenia.
