Galatasaray survive Juve scare to squeeze into Champions League last 16

Galatasaray managed to advance to the Champions League knockout stage despite squandering a three-goal overall advantage against a 10-player Juventus side on Wednesday, suffering a 3-2 loss but holding on through two goals in extra time.

Goals from Victor Osimhen and Baris Yilmaz in the additional period secured a dramatic 7-5 aggregate victory for the Turkish team, paving the way for a potential matchup against Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur in the following round.

The Turkish club last reached this stage of the premier European tournament back in 2014, and they were lucky to progress this time, particularly as Juventus spent much of the match reduced to 10 players.

Juventus took the lead on the evening via Manuel Locatellis 37th-minute spot-kick, but shortly after the break, Lloyd Kelly received a severe straight red card for coming down with his studs on Yilmazs Achilles tendon during a jump.

Kelly was stunned when first given a second yellow card.

However, he became furious as a review on the sidelines monitor prompted referee Joao Pinheiro to overturn that call and issue a direct red for serious foul play instead.

The English player was caught on camera calling the ruling a disgrace, while Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti appeared shocked from the touchline.

This moment seemed to end any hope of a Juventus recovery, yet Federico Gatti netted a consolation goal with 20 minutes left, and then, following Kenan Yildizs near miss off the post from close in, Weston McKennie nodded in to level the aggregate score 12 minutes later.

Edon Zhegrova missed a golden opportunity in the sixth minute of extra time by slicing his shot well off target, allowing Osimhen to capitalise by coolly finishing his sides clearest chance.

Yilmazs strike dashed Juventus dreams of forcing a shootout, somewhat masking Galatasarays display, as the club invested heavily in the off-season, notably 75 million euros to acquire Osimhen from Juventus Serie A competitors Napoli.

Galatasarays vice-president Abdullah Kavukcu has been confident recently, claiming the team will bring in Inter Milan midfielder and Turkey skipper Hakan Calhanoglu.

Yet their showing on Wednesday leaned more towards tactical gamesmanship than flair, with the players employing delaying tactics and feigning contact reminiscent of past Italian squads.
