From Humble Bricklayer to Premier League Record Holder: Brentfords Thiago Aims for World Cup Place
Brentford forward Igor Thiago has etched his name into Premier League history, and now the Brazilian striker is aiming to extend his remarkable journey to the World Cup stage.
Motivated by a deep wish to pay tribute to his late father and drawing inspiration from Cristiano Ronaldos scoring prowess, Thiago has emerged as one of the leagues most formidable attackers.
He established a new benchmark for the highest number of goals scored by a Brazilian in a single Premier League campaign, bagging a brace during Brentfords 3-0 triumph against Sunderland on January 7.
The 24 year old has found the net 16 times in the top division this season, surpassing the prior marks of 15 set by fellow Brazilians Roberto Firmino, Gabriel Martinelli, and Matheus Cunha.
Other Brazilian strikers who have featured in the Premier League include Gabriel Jesus, Richarlison, Philippe Coutinho, Juninho, and Robinho.
Yet Thiago, with his imposing physicality, has eclipsed their achievements despite flying under the radar.
Only three years prior, he was an obscure player at Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad, harbouring far fetched aspirations of emulating his childhood hero Ronaldo.
"Watching Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United was a game changer for me. I thought, I want to emulate that," Thiago shared.
His goal contributions propelled Ludogorets to the Bulgarian championship and secured a significant transfer to Club Brugge in 2023.
Thiagos impressive output in Belgium attracted attention from Brentfords astute scouting setup, known for spotting hidden talents.
The Bees secured Thiago for a record breaking £30 million ($40 million) fee in 2024, though a major knee problem sidelined him for much of his initial campaign.
Thiago has since compensated for that lost period, especially after Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa left during the summer window, paving the way for him in Keith Andrews squad.
He kicked off the season strongly by scoring against Nottingham Forest, followed by a double against Manchester United and a goal in the win over Liverpool.
Thiago also notched a hat trick at Everton shortly before his landmark display versus Sunderland.
Plenty Questioned My Ability
His rapid rise has even astonished Andrews.
"Anyone claiming they predicted this level of performance from him might not be entirely truthful," he remarked.
"Hes been outstanding. I wouldnt trade him for anyone. Hes invaluable to the team."
Thiagos accomplishments are especially noteworthy given the tragedy of losing his father at age 13.
To help his mother Maria, who toiled as a waste collector in their hometown of Gama near Brasilia, he worked as a bricklayer and at a fruit stand.
"My childhood experiences have shaped my approach on the pitch," he explained. "They built my character and taught me to value both small and significant moments.
"Now, reflecting on my current situation, I feel truly fortunate for all I possess."
Thiagos goal rush has lifted Brentford to fifth in the Premier League table, fuelling surprising hopes of a Champions League spot.
The underdog outfit leads local rivals Chelsea by two points ahead of their Saturday showdown at Stamford Bridge.
"Competing in the Premier League was always my ambition. Countless people thought I couldnt make it, but I was determined to show them otherwise," Thiago stated.
With speculation linking him to table topping Arsenal, Thiago has thrust himself into Brazils World Cup conversation.
Although he possesses a Bulgarian passport and has yet to earn a cap for Brazil, donning the Selecao shirt would crown his extraordinary path.
"Thats my ultimate ambition," he affirmed. "Achieving it, which I intend to, will signify Ive truly arrived."
