Freiburg Overcome 10-Man Hamburg for 2-1 Win and Eighth Place in Bundesliga
Freiburg recovered from an early deficit to secure a 2-1 victory against Hamburg at their home stadium in the Bundesliga on Saturday. The away side had to play most of the second half with just 10 players.
Hamburg took the lead through Tottenham loanee Luka Vuskovic shortly after the interval. Freiburg hit back with goals from Vincenzo Grifo and Igor Matanovic following Daniel Elfadli's second yellow card in the 51st minute.
This result leaves Freiburg only three points shy of the positions that qualify for European tournaments.
In Berlin, bottom-ranked Mainz shared a 2-2 draw with Union Berlin. The visitors' coach Urs Fischer took charge of his first game against his previous club.
Mainz midfielder Nadiem Amiri of Germany and ex-Union striker Benedict Hollerbach gave the away team a two-goal advantage. However, Union Berlin responded with late strikes from Jeong Woo-yeong and Danilho Doekhi in the closing 15 minutes to secure the equaliser.
Mainz have gone five matches without defeat in all competitions since Urs Fischer took over in early December. This run includes a notable 2-2 draw away to Bundesliga frontrunners Bayern Munich.
Over his successful five-and-a-half-year period at Union Berlin, Fischer elevated the team from the second tier to their inaugural promotion and a debut season in the Champions League.
In another result, Heidenheim ended 2-2 with Cologne on their home pitch.
Two Saturday fixtures, namely RB Leipzig's trip to St Pauli and Werder Bremen's home game versus Hoffenheim, got postponed owing to intense snowfall in northern Germany.
Bayern Munich could widen their lead at the summit over Borussia Dortmund to 11 points with a home victory against Wolfsburg on Sunday.
Borussia Dortmund played out a 3-3 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday.
