Football Kenya Federation NEC Officials Suspend Hussein Mohammed Amid CHAN Controversy

This ruling from Friday also directed NEC representative Abdullahi Yussuf Ibrahim along with interim chief executive Dennis Gicheru to temporarily vacate their positions while probes into the claims proceed.

Before the NEC acted, Hussein had been set to release a full statement addressing the CHAN insurance issue and various charges levelled at his leadership.

Reports indicate the dispute arose from a substantial insurance deal for the 2024 African Nations Championship, jointly organised by Kenya Uganda and Tanzania starting February 25th.

Details suggest FKF granted a contract valued at KSh 42,406,815 to a newly formed firm even though bids from established insurance providers were more favourable.

Issues Involving Public Money

The NEC and public have been informed of major violations of the FKF Constitution and Kenyan laws such as financial misconduct according to a statement endorsed by nine of the fourteen National Executive Committee members and obtained by Flashscore.

This includes misuse of public resources with claims of stealing around KSh 42,000,000 from the CHAN account alongside infringements of the Public Procurement and Assets Disposal Act 2015 and the Public Finance Management Act involving unfair tender processes and potential conflicts of interest.

The document further states: Effective immediately Hussein Mohammed must relinquish his duties as FKF President Abdullahi Ibrahim should pause his nominated NEC role and Dennis Gicheru needs to halt his interim secretary general position to facilitate the inquiries.

Mariga Appointed Interim FKF Leader

In addition to sidelining Mohammed the NEC selected ex Kenya international midfielder Macdonald Mariga to assume the acting presidency right away.

FKF Vice President Macdonald Mariga will assume the presidents duties and obligations on a temporary basis until the probes and financial review of Football Kenya Federation operations conclude the announcement proceeded.

Mariga received instructions to call an emergency NEC session. The group also demanded the immediate freezing of all FKF related bank accounts including those associated with Hussein Mohammed.

The move references Article 40 of the FKF Constitution which deems a signed agreement backed by most NEC members as equally binding as formal meeting outcomes.

Nine members took part in the NEC session leading to this outcome whereas Charles Njagi Ahmedqadar Mohammed Dabar and Kenneth Rungu were absent.

While in Uganda for a Confederation of African Football gathering on the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations Mohammed who faced these challenges earlier attributed them to spiteful opponents aiming to undermine him yet he promised to resist.

Malicious efforts like these could destroy a lifetime of commitment effort and contributions to advancing society via sports in an instant Mohammed posted across his social media platforms.

My standing could be irreparably damaged forever yet I refuse to let that occur. I plan to provide a thorough rebuttal to these false claims and any forthcoming misinformation. We are aware of their schemes.

Mohammed assumed FKF leadership on December 8th 2024 following an electoral victory where he secured 42 votes in the initial ballot surpassing runner up and former vice president Doris Petra by 11.
