Fletcher defends United academy after Amorim criticism
Interim manager at Manchester United, Darren Fletcher, stated on Friday that the club boasts one of the finest academies worldwide, following pointed remarks from recently dismissed coach Ruben Amorim.
Fletcher assumed temporary leadership after Amorims departure on Monday, guiding the side to a 2-2 stalemate against Burnley just two days later.
Critics pointed to the Portuguese coach for failing to offer sufficient chances to emerging talents from the academy, particularly Kobbie Mainoo.
Moreover, last month he cast doubt on the showings of Harry Amass and Chido Obi, noting a sense of arrogance within the United ranks.
However, Fletcher, who took on the under-18s coaching role in July and rose through the clubs youth system himself, firmly supported the development programme before the upcoming FA Cup third-round match with Brighton on Sunday.
Every United matchday squad has featured a homegrown talent since 1937.
"Over the years, this club has been shaped by its academy, which is truly exceptional," he remarked to the press. "Our achievements stand out clearly.
"I will not say otherwise. We hold an impressive legacy, one that few clubs globally can match in terms of tradition.
"We possess remarkable players and promising prospects. From what I observe, there are diligent, modest youngsters who, being inexperienced, make errors and continue to grow."
Mainoo represented England in the 2024 European Championship final yet has not featured as a starter in any Premier League fixture this term.
Fletcher noted that gauging the 20-year-olds mindset proves challenging as he reveals little.
"He seems positive, has put in strong training sessions, and as mentioned, Kobbie is tough to assess, so we will see," commented the stand-in leader.
Sitting seventh in the Premier League table, United seek an interim appointment until seasons end, with names like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick in the frame.
Fletcher sidestepped inquiries about his prospects.
"(Football director) Jason (Wilcox) and (chief executive) Omar (Berrada) entrusted me with complete authority for these two fixtures, to steer the squad, call the shots, direct preparations, and I have focused on that," he explained.
