Flamengo add Brazilian title four days after Copa Libertadores win

Just four days following their triumph over Palmeiras for a fourth Copa Libertadores trophy, Flamengo clinched the Brazilian championship via a tight 1-0 victory versus Ceara at the legendary Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday.

This represents the ninth national title for Brazils most beloved football outfit, marking their third such success across the previous seven seasons.

The lone goal arrived courtesy of Samuel Lino, Flamengos highest priced acquisition, in the match against Ceara, which preserved the sides unbeatable five point advantage leading Serie A over Palmeiras ahead of their final fixture.

Flamengo joins just four other Brazilian teams in history to accomplish the Serie A plus Copa Libertadores double, a milestone they previously reached in 2019.

In a few years the players will realise what they have achieved, remarked Flamengo coach Filipe Luis. They are eternal.

Santos from Peles era secured the double during 1962 and 1963, with Botafogo achieving it in the prior year.

Elsewhere, Neymar notched a hat trick during Santos 3-0 defeat of Juventude, lifting the Sao Paulo sides prospects of evading the drop.

Santos sit two points above the relegation zones lower four positions with a single game remaining, facing third ranked Cruzeiro, a team that could potentially surpass Palmeiras for the runner up spot.

Flamengos season persists, offering a chance at a treble through success in the Intercontinental Cup.

The Rio based team will meet Mexicos Cruz Azul, CONCACAF title holders, next Wednesdays encounter, after which the victor challenges Egypts Pyramids, African champions, for a finals berth versus European victors Paris Saint Germain in Doha on December 17.
