Initial Eredivisie drop verified: Heracles Almelo conclude three-year stint

Following Excelsior's 5-0 triumph against FC Utrecht earlier that Sunday, Heracles required a victory over FC Volendam to remain in contention against relegation. Unfortunately for the home side, FC Volendam secured a 2-0 victory, which lifted them clear of the drop zone and sealed their hosts' fate.

The defeat angered the local crowd, leading to a halt in play during the closing stages as supporters hurled pyrotechnics onto the field.

Heracles Almelo began their campaign by dropping nine of their opening ten Eredivisie fixtures, a poor run that resulted in the dismissal of coach Bas Sibum back in October. A brief surge under temporary boss Hendrie Krüzen provided the season's sole highlight, featuring a remarkable 8-2 defeat of PEC Zwolle alongside two additional triumphs in four league outings altogether.

Ernest Faber assumed control in December yet managed only a single success in his 16 Eredivisie matches from round 15 through to 31. Matters deteriorated further for Heracles once leading goalscorer Jizz Hornkamp departed for AZ in the mid-season transfer period.

Heracles could never escape the relegation places, occupying 16th, 17th, or 18th position across every one of the 31 rounds this term.

The team from Almelo earned elevation to the Eredivisie via a commanding performance in the 2022-23 Keuken Kampioen Divisie, topping the table with 85 points over 38 matches. They placed 14th in each of the prior two campaigns, yet must now descend once more to the Keuken Kampioen Divisie.
