Final Push: Calhanoglu Captains Turkey's Quest for World Cup Return After 2002
Turkey's 24 year absence from the World Cup is nearing its end. Triumph over hosts Kosovo at Fadil Vokrri Stadium this Tuesday would clinch qualification for Çalhanoğlu, who declared his "sole ambition remains captaining the team at the World Cup," along with Turkey, for the FIFA showpiece in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
"A single final match to fulfil the desire burning since 2002," posted the Inter Milan midfielder on Instagram.
In those days, with Hakan Şükür as the standout forward, the squad fell to ultimate winners Brazil in the semi finals before claiming third against co hosts South Korea, while Calhanoglu was in Waldhof Mannheims youth setup. Over two decades on, he stands ready to emulate icons like Şükür and keeper Rüstü Reçber.
Pressure Mounts on Turkey
Ahead of the play off decider, the side boasting emerging stars like Arda Güler and Kenan Yildiz faces massive anticipation.
"Turkeys finest generation yet," stated ex international Erdal Keser in a chat with kicker. The ex Dortmund forward recoils at the notion of last gasp defeat.
"Failure right at the end would sting deeply."
Yet Keser senses "strong optimism" for the Kosovo encounter, cautioning against complacency since a World Cup berth would mean everything to them too, truly groundbreaking. As a FIFA affiliate just since 2016, the country has yet to grace a Euros or global finals.
Following their 4-3 semi final victory over Slovakia, excitement surges. Pristinas venue seats just 13,000, but as German boss Franco Foda noted to kicker, "up to 100,000 would show if they could."
"Top Priority is the World Cup"
Extra motivation comes from Prime Minister Albin Kurtis administration pledging one million euros for success, though the dream itself drives ex Bundesliga man Foda, 59, and his charges. They aim to "surmount the final obstacle," he stressed.
This holds true for Turkey too, buoyed by Gülers key pass in the 1-0 success versus Romania, with rumours of coastal homes as a qualification reward.
"Reaching the World Cup drives us, and we will pour everything into it," the Real Madrid prodigy affirmed.
