FIFA approves Nicolas Otamendi and Moises Caicedo for opening World Cup fixtures

On Friday FIFA announced that the adjustment seeks to enable nations to deploy their top lineups at footballs premier event, whilst upholding fair sanctions and the competitions complete fairness.

After discussions with the continental organisations, the Councils Bureau reached a full consensus to revise article 10 paragraph 2 within the 2026 World Cup guidelines.

The revision states that single yellow cards along with any awaiting one or two game bans stemming from warnings across various preliminary fixtures, an indirect red, or a straight red for stopping an opponents goal chance or clear scoring moment or for violent conduct will not transfer to the main tournament.

FIFA noted further that all remaining game bans arising from red cards during qualifying rounds will indeed apply to the finals.

The Argentine Football Association revealed on Thursday that talks with FIFAs Bureau secured clearance for Otamendi in their initial game, following his dismissal in the closing qualifier versus Ecuador back in September.

CONMEBOL leader Alejandro Dominguez joined the discussions to support both Otamendi and Ecuadors Caicedo, who received a red in that same encounter.

Portugals skipper Cristiano Ronaldo gained approval back in November to feature from the start after FIFA cut short the last two fixtures of his three game penalty for a red in his teams near final qualifier against Ireland.

During the recent FIFA Council session in Vancouver, a change was introduced so that lone yellows from the World Cup get wiped after the group phase and once more post quarter finals.

The tournament, jointly organised by Canada the United States and Mexico kicks off on June 11.
