Fernandes eyes World Cup success to cap off Ronaldo's storied career
Cristiano Ronaldo, who turns 41 this year, is poised to feature in an unprecedented sixth World Cup this June, with many viewing the event as the concluding highlight of the striker's remarkable career.
"To end this journey at the final World Cup by winning it alongside Cristiano Ronaldo would be truly extraordinary," Fernandes shared with Wayne Rooney in a BBC article released on Friday.
"I sincerely wish we can achieve that, not only for Portugal but also to honour all that Cristiano has contributed to football and the global stage," added the Portuguese midfielder and Manchester United skipper.
Ronaldo, widely regarded as one of the all-time greats yet without a World Cup title, holds the record for international goals with 143 strikes.
This five-time Ballon d'Or recipient was a key figure in Portugal's triumphant Euro 2016 side and has also secured the Nations League on two occasions.
Portugal kicks off in Group K on June 17 versus the Democratic Republic of Congo, then faces Uzbekistan on June 23, both matches in Houston. Their group concludes against Colombia on June 27 in Miami.
The tournament spans from June 11 to July 19 across Canada, the United States and Mexico.
