FC Midtjylland falter in tight Danish title battle after draw with Sonderjyske
FC Midtjylland, who are in the running for the championship, displayed clear vulnerabilities on Saturday. Despite a generally commanding performance, they squandered a 2-0 advantage and settled for a 2-2 tie against Sonderjyske in the Superliga encounter.
Goals came from Aral Simsir and Dario Osorio during the opening 45 minutes, while Elias Olafsson denied a penalty shot. In the closing stages, Mohamed Cherif and Olti Hyseni scored for Sonderjyske to level the match.
This result marks the fourth straight league outing without a victory for Midtjylland. Their title challengers AGF could now extend their lead to seven points over Mike Tullbergs team, with only seven matches remaining, if they win at Viborg FF on Monday night.
Sonderjyske holds third position in the standings, some distance from the leading pair, yet still vying for a spot in European tournaments.
The hosts began assertively on Saturday, with Chilean forward Dario Osorio nearly scoring from a long-range attempt before Simsir netted after 12 minutes.
Defender Ousmane Diao halted a Sonderjyske counter, and utilising Cho Gue-sung as a link, the ball reached the penalty area where Simsir slotted it between Maxime Soulas legs and beyond keeper Marcus Bundgaard.
Midtjylland dominated much of the ensuing play, as 19-year-old debutant Julius Emefile among others challenged Bundgaard.
Towards the end of the first half, Midtjylland midfielder Valdemar Byskov suffered an injury, prompting Diao to shift to central midfield.
At the 60-minute mark, the hosts increased their lead as Osorio capitalised on Simsirs clever deep run, evaded Bundgaard, and nudged the ball into the net.
Victor Bak, recently called up to the national side but unused, came close to a third goal soon after with a powerful strike from distance.
After 67 minutes, Sonderjyske missed a chance to reduce the arrears when keeper Elias Olafsson stopped Lirim Qamili from the spot, but with seven minutes to go, the robust Cherif headed home from Tobias Klysners delivery to make it 2-1.
In the dying moments, just a minute from time, Olti Hyseni stunned the home supporters with an equaliser.
