Everton's Barry scores late to secure draw with Leeds

Thierno Barry, Everton's forward, continued his impressive form by netting a late leveller to earn a 1-1 stalemate against struggling Leeds in the Premier League on Monday.

David Moyes's team faced jeers from supporters at half time following James Justin's opener for Leeds at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

However, Barry calmed the crowd's annoyance with a calm strike 14 minutes before the end.

This 23 year old has found the net four times in his past five league outings, having managed only one goal in his initial 18 appearances after transferring from Villarreal last year.

"As a striker, you must find the back of the net, and he struggled early on. He is improving," Moyes commented.

"He is putting in solid work during sessions and adapting to regular scoring. We must generate more opportunities, and we are still waiting for our forwards to recover fully.

"I am delighted with their response. I have a robust squad that holds each other accountable."

Everton occupy 10th position, whereas Leeds remain six points clear of the Premier League drop zone.

Weekend triumphs for West Ham and Nottingham Forest had ramped up the stakes for Leeds, who needed a win to stay in the fight as the survival scrap intensifies.

In that context, squandering their advantage represented a lost chance for Daniel Farke's outfit, who have tasted defeat just once in their previous 10 league fixtures.

"We feel a touch let down since we were close to taking all three points. We controlled the opening period strongly," Farke remarked.

"It was a top notch display on the road. We have not sealed anything yet, but we must persist and remain grounded."

Before the clash, Farke had called Dominic Calvert Lewin "one of England's top forwards" upon the Leeds man's first visit back to his old side.

Calvert Lewin has silenced doubters since his August switch to Leeds, bagging eight goals across his last 10 league games after just three strikes in his final, injury hit year at Everton.

Yet, Calvert Lewin could not trouble his previous employers on this Merseyside homecoming.

Leeds took the lead via a neatly constructed attack in the 28th minute.

Anton Stach delivered a ball towards Calvert Lewin, but James Tarkowski failed to intercept, letting Justin capitalise with a sharp effort from 10 yards.

Calvert Lewin nearly made it two shortly after, poking Jayden Bogle's delivery against the upright from near point blank range.

Back from Senegal's Africa Cup of Nations success, Iliman Ndiaye threatened to equalise for Everton post break, though Sebastiaan Bornauw produced an outstanding clearance.

Barry came near with a clever touch that drew a stunning stop from Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

Leeds ignored the alert, as Barry drew Everton even in the 76th minute.

With excellent timing, Barry connected with Idrissa Gueye's driven pass, lobbing a precise effort over Darlow from six yards out.

Everton chased a victor, and Gueye, fellow Senegal Africa Cup of Nations star, came agonisingly close by rattling the crossbar with a powerful shot.
