Endrick misses Lyon's post-winter opener yet coach notes smooth adaptation

The promising Brazilian youngster Endrick is set to sit out Lyon's initial fixture following the winter hiatus, although he is adjusting smoothly to his new surroundings in France after transferring on loan from Real Madrid, according to the club's manager Paulo Fonseca on Friday.

This 19-year-old sensation, who has struggled for playing time at Madrid under Xabi Alonso during the current term, made the switch to the Ligue 1 outfit towards the end of December on a temporary basis through to the season's close, all in an effort to cement his position in Brazil's lineup for the 2026 World Cup.

"Endrick began his training sessions this week and he is fitting in exceptionally. The team has given him a warm reception, he feels content, and we are delighted to include him in our ranks," Fonseca shared during his media briefing prior to Sunday's away league clash against Monaco.

"He is prepared for competitive action, his sessions have gone smoothly, and his drive is evident."

That said, Endrick's first appearance for Lyon will have to wait beyond this coming weekend, owing to administrative requirements from the DNCG, French football's financial oversight body.

His debut is anticipated on January 11 instead, in a French Cup encounter against Ligue 1 rivals Lille.

Lyon's campaign has been inconsistent to date, leaving them in fifth place in the top division standings.

With just 22 goals netted so far, they lag behind other upper-table sides in attack, and Fonseca is optimistic that the fresh high-profile addition will spark improvement for the outfit that has claimed the title seven times before.

"Endrick brings a unique style that fits our requirements perfectly. His technical skills stand out, his pace is impressive, and he adds personal flair to the attack," Fonseca remarked about the newcomer.

"He opens up areas on the field, and matches will feel transformed with him involved."
