Endrick impresses as Lyon beat Lorient to end their nine-game losing run

Prior to the match, Lyon had slipped to seventh place after a dismal run that threatened their chances of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, despite earlier promise. Hosting Lorient was no easy task, given the visitors had only dropped points twice in their last 17 league fixtures.

Overall, the opening 45 minutes remained tightly contested, as both teams struggled to create meaningful threats towards the opposition net.

Lyon created the initial opportunity when Roman Yaremchuk nodded a header just above the bar, while Afonso Moreira forced a routine stop from Yvon Mvogo.

However, Lorient gradually gained momentum, with Dominik Greif comfortably claiming Jean-Victor Makengos effort. As the half drew to a close, Les Merlus carved out the periods clearest opening. Left free by Noah Cadious delivery, Bamba Dieng faced an open goal, yet Greif made a brilliant save, then swiftly reacted to block Arthur Avoms follow-up attempt.

During the break, Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca introduced Orel Mangala, Endrick, and Corentin Tolisso, a move that yielded quick results. Just three minutes after the resumption, the home side went ahead courtesy of Yaremchuks maiden Ligue 1 strike, powering a header from Endricks precise cross into the far corner.

The young Brazilian played a key role in the next goal as well, surging into the penalty area and eliciting a parry from Mvogo, allowing the loose ball to reach Tolisso who headed it home.

Lorient pushed for an equaliser, as Dieng missed the target during a clear run at Greif, and they also had a spot-kick decision overturned by VAR, since Moreira had been impeded by Panos Katseris before fouling Dieng inside the box.

Avom came closest next, but Greif diverted his angled shot round the post for a corner kick, though Lorient failed to mount a serious challenge thereafter.

Ultimately, Lyon secured the victory and all three points, narrowing the gap to Lille in third to two points, with five matches remaining in their bid for a return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2019/20 campaign, which saw them advance to the last four.

For Lorient, even victory here would have left only faint prospects of European football next season, and this defeat all but extinguishes those ambitions.
