Eddie Howe prepared to resign if it benefits Newcastle United
Eddie Howe stated on Monday that he would step down if he believed it was the optimal choice for Newcastle following a poor sequence of results that has seen the Magpies slip to 12th position in the Premier League.
Howe has guided the team to the Champions League on two occasions and brought to an end a 70 year drought for a domestic honour by securing the League Cup since his arrival at St James Park in 2021.
The 48 year old has been mentioned as a potential replacement for Thomas Tuchel with the England national team and as the forthcoming permanent manager at Manchester United.
However Howe promised to improve his efforts and contribute further after his players faced boos from the crowd following a 3 2 loss at home to Brentford on Saturday.
"No there is no uncertainty in my thoughts" he remarked when questioned about whether he is still the ideal leader to advance the club.
"That is precisely why I am in this position. If that were not the case then I would not remain because as I mentioned the club comes first.
"I would never prioritise myself over the club. If I felt I was not the suitable person to lead the team ahead and deliver what the players require then I would make way and allow another individual to take charge."
Newcastles chances of qualifying for Champions League football in the upcoming season seem unlikely now that they trail the Premier Leagues top five by 10 points.
Howes squad were also eliminated from the League Cup by Manchester City last week during a spell that includes five matches without a victory across all tournaments.
Yet they have a chance to recover when they face fellow underperformers Tottenham who have not secured a league victory in 2026 on Tuesday.
"We have endured a tough stretch of fixtures and it will remain challenging for us but this is the moment for everyone to demonstrate our determination resolve toughness and passion for what this means to us" Howe continued.
"Above all that must be evident on the field."
