Dzeko attributes shoulder injury in Italy victory to destiny: 'Everything seems guided from higher powers'

The match in Zenica concluded 1-1 following extra time, as Bosnia fought back against a ten-man Italy in a contest packed with unexpected developments, and Dzeko collapsed in the final moments after a challenge from Davide Frattesi.

Supporters at home likely worried when Bosnias leading goalscorer headed to the centre circle for the coin flip with an ice pack pressed to his shoulder, and ultimately, the forward handed over the pre-penalty duties to a fellow player.

"I keep insisting it was destiny, happening right at the matches closing second, preventing me from taking a penalty," Dzeko remarked during a joyful media session on Wednesday.

"Another player took my place, netted the shot, and we emerged victorious.

"Who can say, perhaps if I had attempted it, I might have missed, so everything seems guided from higher powers."

Bosnias goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj faced no need to stop any attempts in the shootout. Pio Esposito fired Italys opening penalty well over the goal frame, and Bryan Cristantes effort struck the crossbar, whereas the home side successfully converted every one of their four kicks.

Bosnias last two penalty takers, the 18 year old Kerim Alajbegovic and 21 year old Esmir Bajraktarevic, together are younger than Dzeko, but both displayed impressive poise in slotting theirs home.

Dzeko, who featured and found the net in Bosnias sole prior World Cup outing back in 2014, participated in the ecstatic festivities with his arm in a sling that remained on for the press event, yet he appeared hopeful regarding a timely recovery ahead of the tournament.

"We are all glad about the arm situation, it is not the gravest outcome," Dzeko stated.

"It probably will not require an operation. Thus, I anticipate returning in perhaps a month, or a month and a half."
