Dramatic Turmoil: Cambuur Denied Promotion After Handball Block and Double-Contact Penalty

Cambuur Leeuwarden had the opportunity to secure promotion to the Dutch Eredivisie by beating 19th placed Jong AZ at home. They went behind on two occasions, as Jong AZ found the net ten minutes into each half, yet Cambuur responded by seizing the lead with two swift strikes in the 78th and 81st minutes.

With victory in sight and promotion appearing certain, the supporters at home began early celebrations for a return to the Eredivisie. However, a corner from Jong AZ disrupted the joy, when a headed effort was blocked by Cambuur midfielder Remco Balk, who echoed Luis Suárezs infamous handball against Ghana in the 2010 FIFA World Cup by using a volleyball style smash to prevent the ball entering Thijs Jansens net.

Balk received a red card for his actions, and Jong AZ were awarded a penalty in the 86th minute. Forward Yoel van den Ban stepped up, but lost his footing during his approach and converted the spot kick with two contacts: as he stumbled, Van den Ban hit the ball with his right foot, then it glanced off his left foot and rolled straight down the centre past Jansen into the goal.

Referee Wouter Wiersma failed to notice the infringement, as did his linesman. Lacking VAR at the Dutch second tier, overturning the goal was impossible. To the fury of the local crowd, who hurled items onto the field, leading Wiersma to halt play briefly.

Things deteriorated further for Cambuur: rather than netting a late winner to seal promotion, Bendeguz Kovacz smashed home a volley for Jong AZ in the 93rd minute, handing them an unexpected advantage which they held firm even after the match paused again, this time because a Cambuur supporter invaded the pitch and attempted to confront the rejoicing Jong AZ squad.

Cambuur could have earned their first promotion since 2021 with a victory, requiring only De Graafschap to drop points against top side ADO Den Haag on Sunday to confirm their comeback. Instead, Cambuur must now bide their time until at least Monday, when their trip to FC Emmen might resolve the outcome.
