Dortmund held at Freiburg after Bellingham sees red
Borussia Dortmund squandered an opportunity to rise to second place in the Bundesliga by allowing a late equaliser in their 1-1 stalemate against Freiburg on Sunday following Jobe Bellinghams dismissal.
Dortmund held the advantage through Ramy Bensebainis strike in the 31st minute yet Bellingham received a red card for a deliberate foul just past the interval.
Freiburg capitalised on their numerical superiority by dominating Dortmunds defensive third and drawing level with a spectacular overhead kick from Lucas Hoeler.
This result marks Dortmunds fourth instance this season of failing to hold a lead and leaves them in third position tied on points with RB Leipzig in second. Bayern Munich could extend their lead to 11 points if they defeat bottom of the table Mainz later today.
Plagued by injuries Dortmund travelled to Freiburg without numerous key squad members and only boasted five substitutes from the outfield.
Early on Dortmund forward Serhou Guirassy headed wide from an unchallenged position inside the penalty area five minutes into the game extending his current goal drought.
Despite netting 38 times across all tournaments last year Guirassy has managed only a single Bundesliga goal in his last 10 outings.
Dortmund opened the scoring as Bensebaini powerfully volleyed home a high free-kick delivery from Yan Couto at close quarters.
The away side appeared in command until Bellingham as the final defender tripped the advancing Philipp Treu near the penalty area line disrupting their rhythm.
As Freiburg bombarded the Dortmund net Gregor Kobel produced several superb stops but was ultimately unable to prevent Hoelers exquisite curled effort.
