Diaz Expresses Deep Pain Over Penalty Miss in AFCON Final
Following Brahim Diaz's missed penalty that led to Morocco's loss in the Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal, the Real Madrid midfielder vowed on Monday to make it up to his supporters.
"My soul is aching," Diaz shared on Instagram. "I dreamed of winning this trophy thanks to the immense affection you have shown me, through every message and every bit of encouragement that reminded me I was not alone. I gave it my all, pouring out my heart most of all."
Diaz earned a penalty in stoppage time after a challenge during a corner kick. There was a lengthy delay for VAR review, and some Senegal players briefly left the pitch in objection, before Diaz tried to deceive Edouard Mendy with a panenka style shot. Mendy stayed alert and held onto the ball. Senegal eventually triumphed in extra time.
"I let everyone down and I own it completely, offering my deepest apologies," Diaz wrote.
"Rising from this will be tough since this hurt runs deep, yet I will push through. Not just for myself, but for everyone who trusted in me and for those sharing my sorrow.
"I will press on until I can give back all this support and become a true source of pride for Morocco."
