Deportivo Toluca beat Tigres on penalties to win CONCACAF Champions Cup

Luis Garcia, Toluca's goalkeeper, emerged as the hero by saving a crucial penalty from Juanjo Purata to secure a 6-5 shoot-out win.

The match went to penalties after the two Liga MX sides finished level at 1-1 following extra time.

This triumph marked Toluca's first since their 2003 success in the competition, which is the top club tournament for teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

Garcia's heroics in the shoot-out were a fitting reward for the Toluca stopper, who had kept his side in the contest during regulation and extra time with a series of outstanding saves to frustrate Tigres.

One double stop by Garcia late in normal time, first from a Romulo header and then a close-range follow-up by veteran French substitute Andre-Pierre Gignac, left Tigres players shaking their heads in disbelief.

Toluca, however, withstood the pressure to take the lead in extra time through substitute Jorge Diaz after 104 minutes.

Diaz collected a pass from Fernando Arce, turned away from the Tigres defence and fired a low shot past former Argentina international goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman.

It seemed that goal would decide the match, but Toluca's home crowd at the Nemesio Diez Stadium fell silent in the 114th minute when Tigres equalised through a towering header from Brazilian defender Joaquim.

That led to the shoot-out, and there were more nerves for Toluca when Franco Romero saw his penalty to win the game saved by Guzman with the home side leading 4-3.

Tigres levelled through Diego Lainez to make it 4-4 and set up sudden death, but it was Tigres who blinked first when Purata's weak effort was saved by Garcia.
