Denzel Dumfries set to join Real Madrid with release clause triggered
Rumours linking Denzel Dumfries, 30, with a move to Real Madrid surfaced earlier this week, and by Tuesday evening, Real Madrid and the Dutch right-back were reportedly nearing an agreement on personal terms.
On Wednesday, Fabrizio Romano and Florian Plettenberg reported that the deal was on the verge of completion after Real Madrid informed Inter of their intention to activate the €20-million release clause in Dumfries' contract. Dumfries had undergone his medical tests in the Netherlands on Wednesday, as confirmed by Dutch sources.
Dumfries is expected to sign a contract lasting until June 2030 in Madrid, where José Mourinho is set to take over as manager. Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate is also anticipated to sign a contract shortly.
Eight trophies with Inter
Denzel Dumfries joined Inter from PSV in 2021 for a reported fee of around €14 million. The 71-cap Netherlands international has since made 207 appearances across all competitions for Inter, winning Serie A twice, the Coppa Italia three times, and three Italian Super Cups.
Dumfries also reached the UEFA Champions League final twice with Inter, losing 1-0 to Manchester City in 2022 and 5-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in 2025.
