De Zerbi pushes Tottenham towards bold attacking play to escape Premier League drop

As the newly installed third manager for Tottenham this season, the ex-Brighton and Hove Albion coach faces seven matches to guide the North London team clear of danger, and he recognised the pressing nature of his mission.

Tottenham have failed to secure a Premier League victory in 2026, managing just 40 league strikes this term which leaves them with a negative goal tally of -10.

"Principles or gradual development are not options for me right now, I aim to instil structure in possession and out of it," De Zerbi explained to journalists before his debut match, a trip to Sunderland on Sunday.

"My goal is to foster character, the proper mindset, bravery in playing and pushing forward. This clubs DNA and teams essence lies in seeking out goals and netting them. Here, I can apply my philosophy."

The Italian tactician promised to continue in the job into the following campaign irrespective of outcomes, calling it the greatest test in his professional life following his agreement to a lengthy deal.

Tottenham tumbled down the table initially with Thomas Frank at the helm, then under caretaker Igor Tudor, landing them in 17th position, just a single point clear of the drop zone.

"Saving Tottenham for the Premier League must be evident to all, as I wish to coach in this league. I feel I merit a role in the Premier League," De Zerbi stated.

"Regardless, with my April contract signature, I must prepare to remain through thick and thin next term. My focus stays on Sunderland and the remaining six fixtures. Yet my vision remains sharp."

That said, a setback hit when striker Mohammed Kudus hit a snag in his quadriceps recovery, the Ghana star also at risk of skipping the World Cup.

"My start lacks fortune. In my plans, Kudus was vital. Still, we press on. We boast numerous fine forwards and must enable them to display their skills," De Zerbi continued.

"Kolo Muani has not shone brightly this year yet he possesses quality. I eyed Mathys Tel for Marseille. Xavi Simons holds immense promise. You know Richarlison and Solanke well. We need to position them optimally."
