Dayot Upamecano extends with Bayern Munich until 2030

The French defender Dayot Upamecano has signed a four-year extension to his Bayern Munich contract, which will now run until 2030, according to an announcement from the reigning champions on Friday.

Aged 27, Upamecano transferred to Munich from RB Leipzig back in 2021 and has featured in 180 appearances for Bayern, during which he has claimed three Bundesliga crowns.

"I'm really happy to be staying at Bayern and continuing to play in this team. We've got a great team and a great coach. We've got big goals together," Upamecano said in a statement.

"I give my all for my teammates, in every training session. I want to keep a clean sheet in every game and I want to win as many titles as possible with Bayern."

Although he encountered significant scrutiny at the start of his time at Bayern, where injuries and dips in confidence hampered his performances, Upamecano evolved into a key player for the French national team ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, even starting in Les Bleus' defeat to Argentina in the final.

Since Vincent Kompany, a former centre-back who took charge at the club in 2024, became Bayern's manager, Upamecano's performances have reached new heights.

Bayern's sporting director Christoph Freund described Upamecano as having "developed into a truly world-class defender and leader here at Bayern".

"The whole package he brings is hugely valuable for our squad. We're happy he's staying with us."

As his previous agreement was due to end in the summer, this news resolves a prolonged uncertainty surrounding the defender's prospects, especially with interest from clubs like Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and various Premier League sides.

Upamecano and his representative engaged in tough discussions for the renewed terms, and German publication Bild noted several weeks back that he had overlooked a deadline set by the club to confirm his intentions.

During a January discussion with Kicker magazine, Bayern's influential figure Uli Hoeness lambasted Upamecano's agent for delaying a choice, calling himself "appalled by this behaviour".

Nevertheless, Bayern adjusted their stance and provided Upamecano with a notable signing bonus along with a release clause effective from 2027.

This campaign, Bayern hold a six-point advantage at the summit of the Bundesliga standings and have advanced straight to the Champions League knockout stage.
